Design Trends: A Room of One’s Own

Everyone wants a sanctuary in their home – a place where they can retreat, relax and be comfortable. For some this is a cozy master bedroom, for others a spa-like bathroom. The entire concept of “man caves” and “femme dens” has catered to the idea of “escaping” from the rest of the house(hold).

So it’s no surprise that these kind of spaces have been in demand, and we’ve worked on several projects that are true in-home retreats including restaurant-quality home bars, wine cellars, garages and game rooms. In a recent project, we helped a client create a true room of her own that also happened to be her closet. Check out how this space takes “walk in closet” to a whole new level.

As soon as you enter this master “closet” it’s clear that it’s for more than just storing clothes. This spacious room is truly a place to relax as you begin or end your day. Our client’s stylish design choices include a modern naugahyde double chair, a chrome and glass sputnik chandelier, wide plank flooring and modern, open cabinetry. A warm, textured rug ties the space together while lightening up the palette of the room.

Mirrors are critical for closets, so a custom built-in one was placed above the vanity. A closet island is a great place for folding and sorting clothes as well as extra storage. The open-front cabinetry allows our client to display her clothes as well as design pieces, artwork, and photos.

One side of the closet does have closed storage for items she didn’t want on display. Next to that hangs a flat-screen TV on a reclaimed wood wall. Extra shoe storage fits perfectly beneath the entertainment area. Recessed pot lights help illuminate the space without distracting from the pendants and chandelier.

This view of the closet upon entering from the bedroom shows how much natural light the room has. A full-length mirror is strategically placed between the window and French doors for optimal lighting. Who wouldn’t want to get ready to tackle the day in this space?

Finally, those beautiful French doors open up to a private balcony where our client can enjoy a peaceful morning cup of coffee, or an evening glass of wine while winding down from her busy day.

A retreat can be anywhere in your house – it doesn’t have to be a bedroom, bathroom or cavernous basement hideaway. Sometimes a room of your own is right inside your own closet.
