At James River Construction (JRC)

A master closet doesn’t have to just be a place to store clothes.

A well-designed and executed closet can be a space to enjoy – whether you’re relaxing at the end of a long day or getting ready to put your best foot forward into a new one. Over the last few years, we’ve helped clients take their closets to a whole new level of functionality and use. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of some of the best ways to elevate your dressing experience.

Custom cabinetry can eliminate that shoe storage issue.

START WITH CUSTOM CABINETS

Custom millwork and cabinetry is the core of an excellent closet space. No matter how many unique features you want your closet to have, good organization and storage is still critical to enjoying the space. Custom (versus DIY pre-fabricated) cabinetry can be designed to suit your specific needs. So if your shoe collection is larger than your clothing collection, you can accommodate that. Or perhaps you have special handbags that need to be stored in a way that ensures they don’t collect dust. Even jewelry storage can be incorporated into custom cabinetry. The design of the cabinets can also be made to meet your aesthetic preferences. Mirrors can be built in, special millwork designs can be done, and countertops can be customized as well.

Carrara marble countertops were incorporated into this custom closet for an island that’s perfect for folding and sorting.

Lighting makes all the difference in this closet space, reflecting off the custom mirrored doors, which provide form and function.

DON’T OVERLOOK THE LIGHTING

Lighting is often overlooked in closets, which is unfortunate since it’s actually one of the most important places to have good lighting when you’re getting dressed and ready to head out the door. Lighting can also really set the mood in the space, so if your closet is a place where you will be spending a lot of time, take care to pick fixtures that represent your taste and create the vibe you’re going for. Adding recessed lighting alongside chandeliers can also help with additional illumination that may be needed. Sconces and pendants can provide focused lighting for specific places such as a vanity or folding island.

Modern lighting fixtures create a specific feel in this cozy yet hip master closet.

ADD IN ENTERTAINMENT TO YOUR MASTER CLOSET

Some of our clients think of their master closets as a kind of lounge, which makes sense. Whether you’re getting ready in the morning with a cup of coffee or winding down at the end of the day with a cocktail, your closet is where you’ll find yourself. So why not lean into it and add in some entertainment? Comfy, plush seating, cozy rugs and ambient lighting can create a space where you’ll want to linger long after your outfit is put together. And as long as you’re sitting there you’ll need something to watch.

A well-placed television is a great way to catch up on the news or Netflix. A good sound system with bluetooth capabilities will allow you to stream your favorite music or podcasts while you’re getting ready.

Your closet can be so much more than storage with some thoughtful design ideas and a few special touches. Use custom cabinetry to create a storage and organization solution that’s right for you. Remember to add lighting to set the mood and provide much-needed illumination. Then top it all off with a little entertainment and you’ll be starting and ending your day in style.

This closet exudes style beyond the clothes it holds.
