A client’s childhood home adapts to a more modern lifestyle.
Often clients come to us for a major home renovation because they love their neighborhood or are emotionally attached to their home, and would prefer to remodel than move, but a connection this tight is rare. In this case, our client had grown up in the home, and was set on preserving its original character while seamlessly integrating more space, better flow and modern amenities that he and his wife needed to continue to enjoy living there.
The primary goals of this project included adding a spacious primary bedroom and bathroom, a larger living area connecting the kitchen and living room, and—most importantly—a layout with excellent flow for gatherings. Their vision extended beyond just updating rooms; they wanted the entire space to feel harmonious, and to craft an architectural experience that merged new and old without compromising on either.
The new layout hinged on creating a courtyard that would serve as both a gateway and a gathering space, connecting the garage to the front entry of the newly expanded structure. Designed in collaboration with Mcallister & Foltz Architecture, P.C. & Dana McKenna Designs, the courtyard became the fulcrum of the new layout, providing an entrance, connection and entertaining point for the rest of the expansion to revolve around. Expanding the terrace required precise masonry work, matching bluestone pavers and railings that look as though they were always part of the home.
With entertainment high on the priority list, the homeowners knew they wanted to have a show-stopping bar area, one that would function as both a statement piece and a functional hub. This stylish bar acts as a bridge between the original home and the new structure, enhancing the flow between spaces and making hosting gatherings a breeze.
Their existing kitchen had done decades of heavy lifting, and while it was still a functional space, it didn’t meet the needs of their social lifestyle. Instead, it was reimagined as a dedicated prep kitchen, allowing the new kitchen space to take center stage in the addition, while still making use of the functionality that was already there.
A butler’s pantry provides a connection between the original (now prep) kitchen and the new, high-design entertaining space. On the other side of the living space, an expansive wet bar connects the addition to the original home.
Meticulously tiled mosaic backsplashes reach up to the 9’ ceilings behind the “his and hers” vanities, while carrara marble flooring and shower tile create a subdued backdrop. Each element feels crafted for relaxation and longevity.
To integrate existing materials and honor the home’s history, the original kitchen’s island countertop was reused in the new laundry room. Hardwood floors by Wellborn + Wright bring a cohesive flow, tying the original and new spaces together beautifully.
With the renovations complete, our clients now have a home that’s as much a reflection of their past as it is of their present lifestyle. This blend of respect for the original architecture and modern luxury allows their family legacy to continue, beautifully updated for today’s gatherings and tomorrow’s memories.
