Modern homeowners have finally given the mudroom its due. We’ve had the pleasure of working on some pretty spectacular mudrooms for clients who, like most American families, are looking for ways to make their lives more organized and maybe even a little bit more beautiful. While they may still contain the mess and mud, we think these modern mudrooms deserve a little limelight.

At James River Construction (JRC)

The mudroom of the past was a cramped, messy space full of boots and coats and who knows what else. Not a part of your house you wanted other people seeing and certainly not a place that got a lot of thought or design attention. Fortunately, however, those days are over. Modern homeowners have finally given the mudroom its due. LAUNDRY AND MUDROOM COMBINED

A great way to use space efficiently and keep messes contained is to combine your mudroom with your laundry room. Dirty workout clothes or sports uniforms can be deposited directly into the washing machine without ever coming into contact with the rest of your house.

This client used a large room off the back door of their home to contain all the kids’ book bags, sports equipment and more. Tons of cabinetry keep everything in its place, and cubbies for each kid minimizes arguing about whose stuff goes where.

Open and closed storage combine for easy to reach items and things you want out of the way.

COLOR AND PATTERN

Modern mudrooms embrace their owners’ personal style. There’s nothing wrong with a room being both organized and pleasant to look at. In this mudroom, custom cabinetry was painted a cornflower blue for a pop of color. The room was also wallpapered in a geometric muted gold pattern that speaks to the owner’s style and sensibility.

An elongated bench is a great place to sit down and take shoes on and off. Both open hook storage, removable baskets and large closed cabinets keep everything in its place and in or out of eyesight, depending on your preference. Tile floors were installed because they are easy to clean and maintain.

The elongated bench creates storage space underneath and is a great place to sit and take shoes on and off.

MINI MUDROOM

Mudrooms don’t have to be massive to be effective and enjoyable. In this client’s home, a small entryway off a side door the family uses to access the yard was converted into a mini mudroom. We were still able to include closed cabinetry for storage, a padded bench for removing shoes, and plenty of hooks for coats, hats and purses. Mud-stopping rugs line the floor to keep any messes contained and the pops of color on the bench, rug and art work make it an inviting space while helping to keep the rest of the home clean.

If you’re considering renovating your current home or building your next home, talk to your contractor about adding a mudroom. A small amount of space can help keep the rest of your house clean, your things organized and your day flowing smoothly.
